Adding AirPort Express to Existing AirPort Extreme Network

Saturday Mar 13, 2010
I am having problems adding my newly purchased AirPort Express to my already existing AirPort Extreme network. I want to add the AirPort Express to my second floor so I can give my X-Box 360 and Sony BluRay player internet access through CAT5 connection to the AirPort Express.

Here are my computer specs:

1. Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
2. Memory 1 GB 677 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
3. Mac OS X Version 10.6.2
4. AirPort Extreme Version 7.4.2 (Working Properly)

I installed the cd software that came with the AirPort Express on my Mac Pro and plugged the AirPort Express into a plug located approximately 3 feet from the AirPort Extreme. The AirPort Express blinks green once, then turns steady amber for approximately 1 minute then turns to a blinking amber.

I went into the Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility but nothing happened and the AirPort Express wasn’t recognized on the left hand side even though the Airport Extreme was displaying properly with a green light.

AirPort Extreme Specs:

1. Channel: 1
2. Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
3. Connect Using: Ethernet
4. Status: Normal

I attempted to do a manual setup on the AirPort Extreme. First I clicked on the wireless tab and set the Wireless Mode to “Participate in a WDS network”. Then I clicked on WDS tab and set the WDS Mode to “WDS Main” as I want the AirPort Extreme to be used as the Base and the AirPort Express to be used as a remote.

I clicked Allow wireless clients and wanted to add a AirPort ID for the WDS Remotes but if the AirPort Express isn’t recognized or showing up how am I supposed to obtain the Airport ID?

I followed the step by step instructions found on Apple.com (Using the AirPort Admin Utility to create a WDS network with multiple base stations) but when I got to step 8 I was stumped and couldn’t really proceed any further since the AirPort Express wasn’t being recognized.

I then connected the AirPort Express to my AirPort Extreme using a Cat5 cable to and restarted the computer.

I reopened the AirPort Utility and it showed the AirPort Express on the left hand side with an amber status along with the AirPort Extreme with a green status.

I went through the same process as stated above and added the AirPort ID from the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme “WDS Remotes”.

I repeated the process on the AirPort Express but instead I changed the WDS Mode to “WDS Remote” and added the AirPort Extreme’s Airport ID as the WDS Main.

I then saved updated everything and restarted my computer.

Still no luck, please help before I start throwing things off bridges!!!!

Thank you kindly in advance and I hope I included all the pertinent information.

doesn’t see external drives

Saturday Mar 13, 2010
I have and airport extreme set up with a MacBook Pro. I have 2 external drives attached to the AE, but they don’t show up in finder. They are Seagate FreeAgent Go drives that I reformatted to Max OS. They work fine if plugged into the MBP. What am I missing?

Is older Airport base station compatible with Airport Extreme Card?

Saturday Mar 13, 2010
I heard that you can’t use an Airport Extreme base station with an Airport card, but I want to know if I can use an Airport base station with an Airport Extreme card? (I guess I am asking if the Airport Extreme card in my Macbook is backwards compatible with older base stations, like a silver one)

(I searched the forums a few ways before posting, but if there is already a topic posted, forgive me)

Thanks in advance,

Airport Exteme + external hard drive?

Friday Mar 12, 2010
I have a Mac mini connected VIA ethernet and a Macbook Pro connected VIA wireless to an airport extreme. When I attempt to run time machine my external hard drive connected VIA usb to the Airport Exteme doesn’t come up as an optional drive, although it shows in finder. I talked to apple tech. support they walked me through some steps, didn’t resolve it, and then stated it wasn’t supported by apple and I would need to plug the external hard drive into the usb on the computer (which I did and it worked). So does it just not work VIA the Airport Exteme even though apple advertises it does?

Here the hard drive I’m using Newegg.com - SAMSUNG STORY Station 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive HX-DU010EB - External Hard Drives

Connection issue for one Mac on our network

Friday Mar 12, 2010
First time poster…so be gentle.

We have DSL, and a wireless network in our home using a Time Capsule. I have a new iMac G5, my wife has a MacBook Pro and upstairs is the older iMac G5 our kids use (all running OSX 10.5.8). I never have connection issues with my G5 (it sits right next to the Time Capsule). My wife’s MacBook never has connection issues (it’s usually in the next room, but also works upstairs). The iMac upstairs occasionally gets a weaker signal.

But the problem is that the upstairs iMac now cannot access the internet or printer over the network. It’s got the wifi signal fine, but it “Cannot locate a wireless device on this network…” This happened once before but I can’t for the life of me remember exactly what I did to fix it- thought it was a one time deal, in one ear out the other. Bygones. I do remember it taking hours of digging into the bowels of discussion forums before I found a solution. Not so this time.

Anyway, I did a hard reset on the Time Capsule, to no avail. I connected the Time Capsule directly to the old G5 via an ethernet cable, hoping it would kick out an IP address, to no avail.

System prefs/Network diagnostics indicate the following status:

Airport (green)
Airport settings (green)
Network settings (yellow)
ISP (red) failed
Internet (red) failed
Server (red) failed

What do I need to do to fix this?

And here are a couple rhetorical questions that are more just frustration than a request for answers:

• What can I do to make sure it never, EVER happens again? (although I will write down the steps to fix it this time).
• Why does it happen only to the old G5?

Thanks for any help.
