Posted by | Under Forums Sunday Aug 16, 2009I got it back, thought everything was all fine and dandy, they replaced the heatsink and the logic board, but the fan is starting to make that same noise again, even though it’s very faint. Now, I’ve mentioned that I’ve brought it in for repairs before, and I can’t keep giving up my computer every few months for days at a time. How likely is it that I will get a replacement MacBook if I ask for one? My warranty is about to expire, and I don’t think it’s fair that I would have to pay for a repair that they haven’t fixed properly in the first place.
Side not: I’ve been a loyal Apple customer for over a decade and have never had as many problems with a Mac as with this machine.

Network speed question
Posted by | Under Forums Sunday Aug 16, 2009Here’s my network setup currently.

My question has to do with transfer speed between the HTPC and the server.
Just moved my first large folder this morning at 28GB including a single file at 22 GB. Transfer speed maxed out at about 900 KB/sec on the smaller files and at 9.5MB/sec on the 22 GB file.
Should this be my expected speed or do I need to upgrade the standard CAT5 cable (about 100′) between the D-Link and the Time Capsule?

MacBook Pro - New to Macs! Info on differences between these models, please!
Posted by | Under Forums Sunday Aug 16, 2009I’m new to Macs and am considering switching to a MacBook Pro. My budget is limited to the lower end models (or lowest end!)…and I have seen this model, which I am guessing is a slightly older model:
(1)
MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz 2GB 250GB 15 Notebook - Micro Anvika UK
I’m comparing it to the new 15″ 2.53GHz model:
(2)
Configure - Apple Store (U.K.)
I noticed that model (1) has 2 graphics cards in (which seems interesting), a slightly slower processer and 2GB of RAM - compared to 4GB in the new model. But it is around 200GBP less.
I’m going to be using the laptop for general use (word processing, using the net…) but I want something that I can start to edit my miniDV tapes with (my current laptops graphic card died 2 years ago and so isn’t up to it) and also record and edit music on (I’ve been using cubase on this laptop).
Does anyone have any info about Model (1)? Is it drastically different in design to the new models? When was it originally released? Does it look any different? Is the engineering much different between the two? Also - does anyone know if the display would be much different between the two?
Thanks for any info!
